The family history of Gardening Aids Ltd.
In the 1960's the Humphreys family emigrated to New Zealand from Kenya. Dad came here to retire but soon found a job working for the Manning brothers at Total Mowers in Milford, then set up his own 'home based' mower repair and light engineering business from his garage in Milford.
In 1967 Peter Humphreys, the oldest of four brothers, arrived from Kenya, worked in Hamilton for Joseph Lucas Ltd for a while, and married a Kiwi nurse in 1968. In 1970 Peter and his father Eric set up E.G. Humphreys & Sons a 112 Wairau Rd on the North Shore. Eric repaired lawn mowers, Peter repaired cars and trucks.
The Pioneer chainsaw agency was the first step into selling Outdoor Power Equipment. They then became the first Dealer on the North Shore to promote the revolutionary Flymo hover mower. Later second brother, Brian, joined the firm which was now called Wairau Mower & Chainsaws Ltd. and a few years later Eric retired. During this time, youngest brother, Robin had qualified as an "A" Grade motor mechanic and gone to Bougainville to work on the copper mines to raise funds for a business in Halls Arcade Takapuna which he called Gardening Aids Ltd. In 1976 Gardening Aids acquired its existing premises at 137 Wairau Road. In the mean time Brian built a yacht and wanted to go sailing so he left, and the two firms amalgamated under the name Gardening Aids Ltd in these premises.
Ross Cato, who joined the Company at this time, is considered to be one of the family. Ross has amassed a huge amount of experience with everything to do with the Outdoor Equipment Industry and his natural desire to give the best of service makes him a valuable employee. This 'can do' attitude is the basis of the Company's philosophy, if you have any problem to do with garden tools and machinery, we can help you to solve it.
